Twelve student teams from Southern California Youth Build divisions and North Orange Country ROP Building Industry Technology Academy (BITA) programs competed for the coveted Design/Build Competition champion title this past weekend in Huntington Beach. The event, now in its 28th year, was held at Reliable Wholesale Lumber in Huntington Beach on Saturday, April 8th and Sunday, April 9th.

The competition, coordinated by Building Industry Association of Southern California, Inc.’s (BIASC) Home Builders Committee (HBC), awarded first place to the team from La Habra High School and second place to the team from Anaheim High School. 

The competition’s mission is to bring tomorrow’s builders and today’s professionals together in a fast-paced, two-day build project that mimics the “real-world” pressures of inspections and deadlines while enforcing the values of safety, teamwork, and craftsmanship. The competition further facilitates opportunities to help high school students in the BITA program develop their career portfolio, participate in field trips at industry sites and network with local businesses. The four-year program, with the help and support of the building industry, is a service provided by the California Homebuilding Foundation (CHF).

The competition involves teams from local high schools and community colleges all competing to build their own structure. Recent years have brought a focus to Green designs, framing and construction techniques. Each school can sell their final product and retain the revenue to support their school’s program.

The Building Industry Association of Southern California, Inc. (BIASC) and California Housing Foundation (CHF) joined forces to host the 2017 Celebrity Waiter event on March 10th at the Turnip Rose in Newport Beach.

The Celebrity Waiter event is a zany and fun charity dinner featured local building industry “celebrities” serving and entertaining their selected guests for the evening. Highlights from the evening included Shea Homes’ Bob Yoder as President Donald Trump and Brookfield’s Adrian Foley as Austin Powers.

The event benefited education programs such as the Building Industry Technology Academy (BITA)—a comprehensive, four-year high school trades program, providing students across California the training they need to enter the building workforce after graduation.

CHF as a foundation itself invests in the future of the homebuilding industry through endowments that provide college and graduate school scholarships and fund research on key public policy issues. CHF’s research organization, CIRB, compiles and publishes statewide construction and new home statistics.

SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The California Homebuilding Foundation (CHF) Hall of Fame gala celebrates exemplary individuals with an unparalleled commitment to the advancement of homebuilding and construction.

On June 27^th, 2017 at the US Grant Hotel in San Diego, seven new inductees will join the ranks of over 200 distinguished men and women who have been recognized for their professional and philanthropic contributions to the building industry. The Foundation is pleased to announce the 33^rd annual Hall of Fame, Class of 2017:

Lynn L. Jacobs (posthumously): President of Ventura Affordable Homes, Inc. in Ventura, CA. Lynn Jacobs began working as an international banker before transitioning to her 30-year career in affordable housing. Jacobs built over 400 homes along the central coast during her time as president of Ventura Affordable Homes. From 2006 through 2011, she was appointed by then-Governor Schwarzenegger to lead the State Department of Housing and Community Development. Paul Johnson: Senior Vice President of Community Development for Rancho Mission Viejo, LLC in San Juan Capistrano, CA. Paul Johnson is responsible for the design and implementation of the master-planned community of Rancho Mission Viejo, a 6,000-acre residential development consisting of 14,000 new dwelling units and five million square feet of non-residential. Johnson was previously employed by Shea Homes, Santa Margarita Company, and more recently, a project manager for the Fieldstone Company’s Newport Beach office. He is a Past President of the Orange County Chapter of the Building Industry Association and served on the Executive Board as Secretary/Treasurer of the Building Industry Association of Southern California (BIASC). Sandra Kulli: President of Kulli Marketing in Los Angeles, CA. Sandra Kulli is a specialist in cultural anthropology and community development, supporting smart growth, sustainability and humanistic home design. For 20 years, Kulli helped redefine and guide the transformation of the PCBC tradeshow into a powerhouse brand, and in her 30-year career, has worked with over 100 companies on 193 communities worldwide. Kulli consults with builders and developers on marketing strategy for communities, such as Great Park Neighborhoods in Irvine, Stapleton in Denver, Daybreak in Salt Lake City and The Pinehills in Plymouth, Massachusetts, among others. Gary L. McDonald: Chairman of the Board of Gary McDonald Homes in Fresno, CA. Gary McDonald emerged in the industry as a custom homebuilder in 1970 and has since constructed over 7,500 homes and lots, including partnering with Wilson Homes to develop the Dominion–a 3,000-unit Planned Community in Fresno. McDonald is currently partnering with Granville Homes, developing and building Copper River Ranch, a 900-acre Golf Course Community. McDonald is known for his high-quality workmanship and attention to detail, as well as his environmental advocacy for clean air building practices. Jill D. Williams, AIA: Principal |Chairman of KTGY Architecture+Planning in Oakland, CA. Jill Williams is a licensed architect who joined the KTGY Group in 1991 and established the firm’s Northern California division in Oakland in 2006. Often described by clients and colleagues as “passionate” about architecture and building, Williams has become a well-known industry figure for her leadership and innovation in sustainable design of residential and mixed-use structures. Borre Winckel: President and Chief Executive Officer of the Building Industry Association of San Diego County in San Diego, CA. Borre Winckel emerged in the industry as a land developer in the Temecula area, after a banking career with Chase Manhattan in NYC. Before joining the BIA of San Diego in 2008, Winckel served as Executive Director of the Riverside County BIA, where he led the industry’s participation in rewriting the County’s General Plan, its Transportation corridors project and a new Multiple Species Habitat Conservation Plan. Bob Yoder: Division President of Shea Homes Southern California in Irvine, CA. As president of Shea Homes, Bob Yoder is responsible for the design, planning, development, construction and marketing of the company’s single- and multi-family residences throughout the major Southern California counties (except San Diego). Yoder joined Shea in 1996 as Vice President of Community Development after serving as General Manager of Hix Homes for 10 years. Four new members have been appointed to the California Homebuilding Foundation (CHF) Board of Trustees, each beginning a three-year term.

The Sacramento-based Foundation’s newest trustees are: Alan Boudreau, Founder and President for Boudreau Pipeline Corporation, Corona, CA; Gary Ryness, Chairman for The Ryness Company, Danville, CA; Laura Ulanoski, Vice President, Operations for the BIASC Orange County Chapter; and Donald Babbitt, Director of Forward Planning for Warmington Residential, Pleasanton, CA.

CHF’s 2016 chair, Joan Marcus-Colvin, Chief Marketing Officer for The New Home Company, says, “Our Foundation is extremely pleased to welcome these new trustees to our board. They bring their experience and leadership and more importantly, highlight their desire to serve and give back to our industry.”

The Board of Trustees oversees the Foundation’s activities and is responsible for the policies governing the CHF. Anaheim High School, Valencia High School and Luther Burbank High School have combined their efforts, completing four playhouse structures, to win this year’s Inaugural Statewide Design/Build Competition on June 27th and 28th at the California State Capitol in Sacramento.

The schools are a part of the Building Industry Technology Academy (BITA), a comprehensive four-year high school program aimed at producing skilled professionals who will be qualified and confident to enter the homebuilding workforce. The program is promoted by the California Homebuilding Foundation and developed by BIA member companies and education leaders.

The statewide construction competition gathered educators and over 350 students from Youth Build divisions and various Southern California High Schools, Community Colleges and Regional Occupational Programs (R.O.Ps) in a collective endeavor to highlight the importance of Career Technical Education (CTE) and workforce development programs at the high school level.

Students received a warm welcome from some of the State’s top leadership, Assembly members Jim Cooper (D - Elk Grove), Tom Daly (D - Anaheim), Ling Ling Chang (R - Anaheim), and Jim Frazier (D - Oakley), as well as, staff from the offices of Senators Richard Pan, Tom Berryhill, Bob Huff and Assembly member Ken Cooley.

Valencia High School and Anaheim High School previously won 1st and 2nd place at the 27th Annual Design/Build Competition in April, which was coordinated by the Home Builders Committee (HBC) and the Building Industry Association of Southern California, Inc. (BIASC). The competition was held at the OC Fair & Event Center’s 2016 Imaginology Event in Costa Mesa on Saturday, April 16 and Sunday, April 17 where the state winners previously competed alongside Cordova High School, another BITA school.
