Sheryl Palmer of Taylor Morrison, Dave Kosco of Bassenian Lagoni join Non-profit's Board

Mar. 7, 2017 / PRZen / NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. -- HomeAid America, a building industry charity and one of the nation's largest builders of housing for the homeless, announced today that Sheryl Palmer, Taylor Morrison Homes' President and CEO, and Dave Kosco, Bassenian Lagoni Architect's Senior Principal and Director of Design, have joined their Board of Directors. Ms. Palmer will also be joining the Board's Executive Committee.

"We are extremely excited and fortunate to be adding two industry leaders like Sheryl Palmer and Dave Kosco to our Board of Directors," said Peter Simons, CEO of HomeAid America. "Sheryl is one of the leading homebuilder CEOs in the country and has led Taylor Morrison to great success during her tenure, during which the company has ramped up its involvement with a number of HomeAid's local chapters. The passion she has for our cause will now be taken to a national level at Taylor Morrison, and with her on both our Board and Executive Committee, we will greatly benefit from her leadership."

"Partnering with builders of housing for the homeless intensifies our ability to reduce homelessness and improve the quality of life for individuals and families across the nation," said Palmer. "Taylor Morrison's team members are passionate about giving back to the communities in which we build, and we hope to help HomeAid expand their local chapters' presence into more markets where we operate."

"We are also fortunate to be adding a leader of one of the nation's top architectural firms — Bassenian Lagoni — with the election of Dave Kosco to our Board," Simons added. "Bassenian Lagoni has been a partner of HomeAid for literally decades, and Dave has been involved in a number of their efforts to support us. He is well respected in the industry and has a heart for our cause that will be invaluable as we seek to help more families and individuals experiencing homelessness across the country."

"Providing shelter to the temporarily homeless must be our first step to ending this problem permanently," said David Kosco, AIA, Senior Principal and Director of Design at Bassenian Lagoni. "HomeAid, as the home building industry's own charitable organization, is in the perfect place to lead this effort and I am honored to be a part of this important work."

HomeAid is in its 28th year of helping those who are homeless through the construction of housing for charities working to get those in need of shelter not only housed but permanently back on their feet. Homelessness remains a major problem in this country, and its causes are numerous and diverse, including job loss, medical crisis, domestic abuse, substance addiction, and post-traumatic stress syndrome in veterans. Indeed, 80% of these families and individuals are situationally homeless and can be moved back to self-sufficiency with the right help at the right time.

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., Jan. 30, 2017 — HomeAid America, a building industry charity and one of the nation’s largest builders of housing for the homeless, announced today that CalAtlantic Homes’ Executive Chairman and industry leader Scott Stowell will lead their Board of Directors as Chairman for 2017-18.

„We are thrilled to have someone of Scott’s stature and passion leading our efforts for the next two years,” said Peter Simons, CEO of HomeAid America. „Homelessness remains a major problem in this country, and its causes are numerous and diverse, including job loss, medical crisis, domestic abuse, substance addiction, and post-traumatic stress syndrome in veterans. Indeed, 80% of the homeless are only situationally so and can be moved back to self-sufficiency with the right help at the right time.”

Scott Stowell said, „I am proud to take on the Chairmanship of HomeAid America as it continues its 28-year role as the leader in the building industry’s efforts to help those people in the greatest need in our country; those without a place to call home. HomeAid has a proven model and track record in this area, and our work is needed now more than ever with several major cities experiencing homelessness crises.”

„Scott’s leadership will be invaluable to HomeAid as we seek to build on the great strides we made to help the homeless in 2016.” Simons noted, „We completed 30 new projects across the country last year which added nearly 500 beds for the homeless. We also conducted nearly 100 community outreach activities that involved over 1,800 volunteers. I am certain that with Scott’s commitment to our cause and his position of respect and influence in the industry, it will allow us to reach new levels in the coming year.”

Scott Stowell is the Executive Chairman of the Board for CalAtlantic Group, one of the nation’s largest publicly traded homebuilders. Stowell was instrumental in the creation of CalAtlantic through the merger of Standard Pacific Homes and Ryland Homes in 2015. Prior to that, he held various roles at Standard Pacific for almost three decades, culminating with his appointment as CEO and President in January 2012. Stowell is also active in numerous other industry related organizations such as the Leading Builders of America, the Fisher Center for Real Estate at UC Berkeley, and the Harvard Center for Joint Housing Studies.

BIA –LAV and HomeAid America has announced a new LA Chapter. see more

A Los Angeles Chapter of HomeAid America, a national non-profit provider of housing for homeless families and individuals for 27 years, has been established in partnership with the Building Industry Association of Southern California—Los Angeles/Ventura Chapter (BIA –LAV), with whom HomeAid LA will share offices. BIA-LAV CEO Tim Piasky agrees the timing is good.

"There is a great need to address now the rising homeless population in L.A., and the building industry wants to give back to our community by doing what we do best: build housing. We are proud to support HomeAid LA and look forward to uniting our efforts to build housing for care providers helping those experiencing homelessness in our region," he says.

It is estimated that 50,000 people are living on the streets of Los Angeles. The mayor recently declared a state of emergency, and the city government continues to pursue various approaches to try to stem the tide. This makes it an opportune time for the building industry's leading charity fighting homelessness to join the effort.

"We are thrilled to be active in L.A. helping homeless families and individuals on behalf of the building industry," says Peter Simons, CEO of HomeAid America. "HomeAid has a long history and successful track record of enabling the building industry to give back effectively to local communities by building and rehabilitating housing for organizations helping families and individuals experiencing homelessness. HomeAid has been active in Southern California since its creation in 1989 and has created thousands of new beds for charities working in this area."

The HomeAid LA Chapter will be operated locally under the direction of a local board of directors, chaired initially by Sandra Stewart, a partner at the Cox Castle Nicholson law firm. HomeAid LA's Board of Directors includes executives from powerhouse industry players such as KB Home, Lennar Homes, CalAtlantic Homes, Shea Homes, Brookfield Residential, TRI Pointe/Pardee Homes, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Fidelity Title Group, Kennedy Wilson/Meyers Research, and others. HomeAid LA is receiving its initial financial support from funding from HomeAid America and a grant from the Lennar Charitable Housing Foundation.
