LOS ANGELES – International award-winning KTGY Architecture + Planning announced today the firm’s Los Angeles office has completed its sixth year of teaching and mentoring students attending Bell High School in the City of Bell, Calif. Through the ACE (Architecture-Construction-Engineering) Mentor Program Los Angeles, volunteer mentors and staff from KTGY’s Los Angeles office provide Bell High School ACE students with bi-weekly hands-on learning activities and classes relating to the field of design-build to educate, mentor and inspire these students throughout the school year.

In addition to supporting the ACE Mentor program, KTGY gives an annual monetary donation to the ACE Mentor program, which provides scholarship money for ACE Mentor program graduates. According to Manny Gonzalez, FAIA, managing principal of KTGY’s Los Angeles office, “KTGY’s ACE mentors and volunteers plan, coordinate and deliver a substantive bi-weekly program that educates 20 Bell High School students annually about the design and construction industry.”

KTGY Project Manager Anabel Martinez, has been involved in the ACE Mentor Program for nearly 14 years and was selected as the ACE Mentor Los Angeles “Architect Mentor of the Year" in the past for her mentorship, team leader activity, and dedication to the growth and impact of ACE Mentor Los Angeles at Bell High School.

Martinez is the liaison for KTGY’s ACE Mentor volunteer staff members and Maria Setaro, project associate, has served as the team leader in charge of planning and coordinating mentor activities and lessons. She has been assisted by Fernanda Frisby, senior designer; Jose Cerezo, senior job captain; Arthur Zohrabians, project associate; and Liz Vento, project associate. Oliver Inauen, project manager, has been involved with the West Los Angeles ACE Mentoring Team.

“At KTGY, we are grateful for the opportunity to work with the students at Bell High School,” said Martinez. “Introducing them to career possibilities in the construction and design industry sparks their excitement and this is contagious! Some of our students are the first in their family to attend college or trade school. The ACE Mentor program is a great example of how doors can open when you share your life with young people.”

Setaro adds, “One of the many things I look forward to is the interaction with our students. We get inspired and motivated with their energy and creativity to develop design activities. We also strongly promote team collaboration and mentorship to the students. These two are very applicable not only in the classroom but in a real-world setting. Greater achievements can be accomplished when you support, contribute, and elevate your team; and both KTGY and ACE are great examples of cultivating team player attitudes.”

Last year, KTGY volunteers and the Bell High School Ace Mentor program students toured the landmark Wilshire Grand Tower that was under construction at the time in downtown Los Angeles. “The students learned about the site complexities and limitations of building this 73-story high-rise, which will be the tallest building west of the Mississippi, and is designed to sway up to eight feet in each direction during an earthquake,” said Martinez. “Everyone’s favorite part of the tour was taking the construction elevator up to the 65th floor and enjoying the amazing views of Los Angeles.”

The group also visited the Frank Gehry exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).  Martinez said, “Several of our students had never been previously to LACMA or even to an art museum. These kinds of activities serve to inspire and spark the imagination.”

The ACE Mentor team will launch the new 2017-2018 program in September. For more information about ACE Mentor Program, see www.acementor.org

COVO, Design-Forward, ‘Small-Lot’ Homes Open in Silver Lake see more

Model Grand Opening, Saturday, April 22nd

Modern Design Includes Rooftop Decks and Views

SILVER LAKE, Calif. - Planet Home Living has unveiled COVO, a collection of 10 sleek, small-lot homes in the heart of Silver Lake. The community includes a new, fully-furnished model home set to grand open on Saturday, April 22nd and is open “by appointment only” prior to the grand opening.

“With its modern design and desirable location close to everything – yet hidden on a quiet street in Silver Lake – we are already experiencing high demand at COVO,” said Planet Home Living CEO Michael Marini. “The response is similar to what we experienced at Prism in nearby Eagle Rock, where homes sold out in a matter of weeks.”

Both communities are designed by international award-winning KTGY Architecture + Planning. KTGY has more than 900 homes in various stages of construction developed under the Los Angeles Small Lot Ordinance, which it helped to formulate with the City of Los Angeles.

Rendering by KTGY Architecture + Planning

COVO is a community of structurally independent, detached single-family residences.  With no shared walls, the homes strike an ideal balance for home buyers who seek spacious, eco-friendly living that is easy to care for and close to where they work and play. The location near Sunset Blvd. puts owners in the heart of Los Angeles’ thriving urban core, close to boutiques, restaurants, nightlife, markets and recreational opportunities at the nearby Silver Lake Meadow and dog park (adjacent to Silver Lake Reservoir). At the same time, COVO is nestled on a quiet residential street.  Echo Park is nearby and it’s a quick commute by car or public transit to Downtown L.A. The entertainment hubs of Burbank, North Hollywood and Studio City are easily accessible.

Planet Home Living is a forward-thinking builder that understands the complexities of urban infill development and contextual design principles as well as the needs and lifestyles of today's buyers who want to own a single-family home but also live in an urban, amenity-rich walkable and established neighborhood.

    Layout and Design

Designed by KTGY Architecture + Planning, COVO seamlessly integrates with its desirable urban surroundings. Standout design elements include soothing colors and metal siding that combine to create sophisticated exteriors. The innovative floorplans emphasize elevated outdoor spaces – either large decks or rooftop terraces – all of which offer vistas of the surrounding hills.

“The metal siding adds an industrial-modern tone to the homes that will maintain its striking, ‘rusted’ patina over the years,” said KTGY Principal Alan Scales, AIA. “As for the floorplans, the 10 homes distinctively maximize their square footage with open kitchen/living spaces and private indoor-outdoor experiences that capture the fantastic views, each in their own way. The whole community fits together like an intriguing puzzle.”

Layouts offer 3 bedrooms, up to 3 1/2 bathrooms and approximately 1,860 to 2,000 square feet of living space.  Each detached COVO residence features a rooftop deck or large balcony for relaxing alone or dining with friends. A ground-level bedroom may flexibly serve as office or studio space, ideal for professionals who work at home. Each home has an attached, private 2-car garage with direct home access and plenty of storage.

Prior to its grand opening date on April 22nd, COVO is open by appointment only on Waterloo Street in Silver Lake, Los Angeles. Pricing starts at $1,059,000 and the interest list is growing quickly.  Stop by the grand opening on April 22nd or call today to schedule a private tour.

AIA, Director, Design at KTGY Receives 2017 National AIA Young Architects Award see more

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

IRVINE, Calif. – The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has announced Benjamin Kasdan, AIA, LEED AP, NCARB, director, design for KTGY Architecture + Planning’s multifamily studio, is a recipient of the 2017 AIA Young Architects Award. Young Architects are defined as professionals who have been licensed 10 years or fewer regardless of their age. This national award, now in its 24th year, honors individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and made significant contributions to the architecture profession early in their careers. Kasdan and 13 other award recipients will be honored at the upcoming 2017 AIA Conference on Architecture in Orlando, Florida, held on April 27-29.

David Senden, principal and board of directors, KTGY Architecture + Planning said, “Ben Kasdan combines artistic sensibility with design acumen and dedication to the profession of architecture. All of us at KTGY are so happy to celebrate with Ben on the occasion of this well-deserved honor from the AIA.”

Kasdan has played a pivotal role in real estate projects located throughout California, along the East Coast, and overseas for more than a decade. Focusing on the sustainable design of multifamily, mixed-use and infill-housing development, he’s a team leader in the firm’s Irvine, Calif. office. Creating fresh designs that relate to the existing neighborhood and developing new thinking about living more comfortably in smaller spaces such as at AVA H Street in Washington, D.C. and at The Maxwell in Arlington, Va., are great examples of his team’s design. These designs have been acknowledged with awards from Best in American Living (BALA), Multifamily Executive (MFE) and Great American Living (GALA), among others, for the highest design quality. Other noteworthy designs include 2125 Franklin in Eugene, Ore., located within minutes of the University of Oregon campus, and housing more than 700 university students; and m.flats Crystal City in Arlington, Va., a high-rise mixed-use apartment community with a rooftop amenity.

In addition, Kasdan chairs the firm’s licensure committee and recently became an NCARB licensing advisor. In 2014, he traveled to all five of the firm’s offices to assess each or their needs and resources. His tour culminated with the creation of online resources to aid in licensure, hosted on the firm’s intranet and easily accessed by all employees.

Kasdan is currently the 2016-17 vice president of AIA California Council’s Academy for Emerging Professionals, a volunteer leadership group that represents students, associate members, and young architects. His personal commitment to mentoring and serving the profession is further evidenced by his passion to assist those still in school. In addition to serving as an architectural design critic at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Orange Coast College, he contributes articles and blog posts on topics related to sustainable architecture and multifamily housing to various industry publications.

The 184-acre master-planned community features a variety of single-family detached homes and townhomes. Wallis Ranch will deliver more than 800 new homes within eight neighborhoods to the Bay Area region that has seen a significant increase in housing demand. To create a tranquil enclave that appeals to buyers’ active lifestyles, Trumark Communities has dedicated over half of the master plan’s acreage to parks, open space and a water-quality basin. Community amenities also include trails and a community clubhouse with pool and fitness center.

Cleo at Playa Vista in Playa Vista, California, received the Gold Award for Best Architectural Design of an Attached Home Plan. Located within the walkable and amenity-rich master-planned community of Playa Vista, Cleo provides luxury single-level living in four-story stacked flats by Brookfield Residential. Each unit is directly accessed by way of an elevator opening to a personal lobby space, providing residential privacy and establishing convenient access to Plan 3’s private three-bay garage. The award-winning Plan 3 features a private ground-floor living suite with its own entrance, perfect for multi-generational families, home office or visiting grandkids. The plan’s second level has an expansive great room with floor-to-ceiling windows and a spacious private deck, continuing the entertaining space outdoors. With one unit per floor and no shared walls, residents have an abundance of natural light in every room. The large master suite plus two additional bedrooms and a flex room off the great room and deck provide ample opportunities for personalization. Cleo at Playa Vista offers residents magnificent views, a resort gym, public parks and close by access to shops, restaurants, entertainment and employment.

Mason at Playa Vista received the Silver Award for the Attached Community of the Year. Mason at Playa Vista also provides single-level living within the highly desirable master-planned community of Playa Vista. The six-plex stacked flats by Brookfield Residential feature an unconventional mix of modern and traditional architecture with a blend of brick and beachside accents, creating a unique coastal feel. Mason, tucked away against the bluffs, offers residents picturesque views enhanced by floor-to-ceiling windows in the expansive great room and private patios. Elevators located on the interior of the building serve two residences per floor, allowing a more private feel. Each unit has a private two-car garage with elevator access; plan three offers ground-floor entry and bedroom suite, ideal for guests or multi-generational families.

Regency at Summerlin, The Wakefield Plan in Las Vegas, Nevada received the Silver Award for Best Architectural Design of a Single-Family Detached Home 2,000 to 2,499 Sq. Ft. Designed for the luxury 55+ buyer, this gated community offers three distinct home collections by Toll Brothers. The desert contemporary exteriors feature stone and a neutral color palate, allowing the homes to reflect the rugged desert terrain, while the clean modern lines of the home sit in stark contrast. Courtyards establish the initial entertaining location and welcome guests into the foyer with raised ceilings and sightlines through to the covered back patio. Expansive multi-panel sliding doors open to the rear yard, unifying the indoor and outdoor spaces. Keeping the sleeping rooms on one side of the home, this plan establishes entertaining and shared space that is unique from the sleeping space.

Los Altos, The Verano Plan, also in Las Vegas, received the Silver Award for Best Architectural Design of a Single-Family Detached Home 3,501 to 4,000 Sq. Ft. Flexibility was a driving factor in the design of this plan by Toll Brothers. Separate flex spaces linked by covered outdoor space, multi-generation living spaces and dual master designs allow buyers to create a home tailored to their specific lifestyle. The Verano's elaborate courtyard and open rotunda foyer welcome guests. Two different lot sizes (70x120 and 80x120) were created in order to achieve different plan feels while maintaining the average target lot size.

Anthem House in Baltimore, Maryland received the Silver Award for the On-the-Boards Community (Under Construction On – Not Yet Open For Sale or Rent). Developed by The Bozzuto Group, Anthem House is a 292-unit mixed-use project located on a prominent site facing the Baltimore Harbor in Locust Point-Ft Mc Henry neighborhood. The building massing displays a “Z”-shape plan maximizing the unit vistas and creating two distinct courtyards facing the city and the harbor. The two main building highlights, a 3,500-square-foot sky lounge and a residential tower entry, work as main urban markers facing the neighborhood and the harbor. The metal tile steel/zinc alloy utilized in the building’s façade reflect the light and activate the urban skyline. The 19,000 square feet of retail activate the streets and serve both residents and the community at large.

IRVINE, CALIF. – International award-winning KTGY Architecture + Planning announced today that Orange County-based Civic Partners, the developer of Artisan Alley at The Diamond, a unique retail development located in western Riverside County in the City of Lake Elsinore, Calif., designed by KTGY, recently received approval from the city council and planning commission.

Located near the Lake Elsinore Diamond Stadium, the proposed retail development will bring a creative, commercial destination, which is expected to energize the adjacent area. Capitalizing on the craft brew craze, Artisan Alley will offer a variety of craft breweries as well as complementary non-traditional food offerings and retailers. Plans call for 95,000 square feet of retail/restaurant space and a 130-room hotel on 11 acres at the northeast corner of Diamond Drive and Malaga Road.

“We are ecstatic the City of Lake Elsinore was so receptive to the overall vision and design of Artisan Alley,” said Simon Perkowitz, AIA, PE, principal of KTGY’s Retail Studio in Irvine, Calif. “This project will surely become a premiere retail destination for not only residents of Lake Elsinore, but visitors from all over Southern California. Artisan Alley will offer a place to gather and relax, plenty of shade, awnings, meandering walkways, landscaping and lighting elements, which all contribute to the ambiance and an enriched customer experience.”

Perkowitz adds, “The key is in the details and amenities. The architectural style is inspired by the repurposing of old industrial warehouse sites and includes a mix of brick, distressed wood, corrugated metal and steel accents.”

According to Civic Partners, Artisan Alley will be built in two phases, the first phase will consist of the construction of a 7,000-square-foot restaurant building, 21,500 square feet of brewery space, 11,200 square feet of retail, and a 6,700-square-foot pad building for a restaurant and/or shop space. Groundbreaking will commence in early 2017 with an estimated completion in 2018.

“Our team came through with a complete and high-quality design that was enthusiastically approved by the City,” said Jeff Pomeroy, PE, vice president development with Civic Partners. “We worked closely with the City of Lake Elsinore in arriving at a solution that works for both the community and consumer’s needs. Artisan Alley will offer a restaurant and retail option that residents and visitors are looking for. It will create an excellent synergy with the Diamond stadium and other adjacent residential and sports oriented developments.”

The firm’s Making a Difference Program invites staff members to apply for funds to support organizations that are near and dear to team members’ hearts. This year, through the Making a Difference Program, KTGY supported employees’ commitments to feeding the homeless at Thanksgiving time, building parks on vacant lots, and educating girls in need. Several team members volunteer with the ACE mentor program, inspiring high school students to pursue careers in the architecture-construction-engineering field.
